Gold Coast CIty Council must have had a brain implosion when it removed family plaques installed on the beach at Snapper Rocks.
With no community consultation, heartless bureaucrats removed the plaques erected by family members in memory of loved ones lost in the sea.
If local government is supposedly the level of government closest to the people, the Gold Coast City Council makes its supposed concerns for the people look like a cross between democracy in Communist China and Soviet Russia.
Shame, shame, shame!

I was absolutely disgusted when I came home on Friday afternoon to see on the news that my daughter's plaque had been removed off the rocks at Snapper.
ReplyDeleteThis was her favourite beach where she used to come to chill out from the world when things got too tough for her, and this is where we scattered her ashes into the ocean. Now we have nothing!!
i agree the council shouldn't have removed the plaques - but there's an error in your blog - the plaques are not put there in memory of people 'lost at sea' - they are put there in memory of people who have died in many ways - car accidents, disease etc - the reason families put them there is because the deceased person had a connection to the area, ie they were a surfer or just loved snapper rocks as a place
ReplyDeleteI believe that it is a disaster to allow memorial plaques at snapper rocks, or on any beach or nature reserve for that matter. I prefer the idea of dog faeces being allowed to be left on beaches, without it being wrapped and preserved in plastic bags. I feel for the loss of children. I've lost a child, but even then, I do not believe that for her namesake I deserve the right to claim natural beach using brass or any such other memorial materials. There are other ways to memorialise the connection between people and landscape. Whatabout a painting of the person there, or even something temporarily sited ? Less subtle is to have ashes scattered. Personally, after death I'm not interested in my ashes so much. I'd like my waters to go to snapper rocks.
