Drivers in jam as Ipswich Motorway closes

TURNING an easy Sunday commute into a prolonged crawl, drivers on the Ipswich Motorway faced extensive delays at the weekend.

A long stretch of the Ipswich-bound lanes of the motorway was closed for 19 hours, to enable underground drainage works to be installed beneath the road.

The westbound lanes of the Ipswich Motorway were closed between 5pm Saturday to noon yesterday.

During these works all Ipswich and Logan motorway traffic heading Ipswich-bound were diverted at the Goodna/Redbank exits at Gailes, along the Brisbane Road service road.

Motorists re-entered the motorway via the Goodna on-ramp near William Street.

Driver Helen Davies said she spent 90 minutes stuck on the motorway as she travelled back to Ipswich after taking part in a Mother's Day fun run in Brisbane.

"The traffic was at a standstill," she said.

"I know it has to be done but it was still very frustrating.

"I just hope I don't get stuck in any more of the closures they've got planned."

A spokesperson for Queensland Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace the works were essential to protect the millions of dollars worth of work already undertaken on Ipswich Motorway upgrades.

"We understand the frustrations of motorists with the closure, but we would ask them to be patient and bear in mind that these are vital works which will make travel a lot more seamless and free flowing in the future," she said.

She said roadworks were typically arranged on days and at times likely to have the least impact on motorists.

Ipswich Councillor Paul Tully, whose electorate takes in the Gailes and Goodna area, echoed her sentiments.

"I think people just need to be patient and know that there's a light at the end of the tunnel," he said.

Traffic on the Ipswich Motorway heading to Brisbane will be diverted off the motorway at Brisbane Road, Redbank during the following times:

From 7pm on Thursday, to 5am Friday, May 14;

From 7pm on Friday, to 5am Saturday, May 15;

From 5pm on Saturday, to noon Sunday, May 16;

From 7pm on Sunday, to 5am Monday, May 17.
