Queensland Council powers revoked

TheSundayMail.com.au

Dog owners with a history of creating a public
menace by flouting animal control by-laws can
no longer be refused the right to register new pets with councils under state
law.

Queensland councils
say the change puts public safety at risk by removing a tool used to stop residents with a history of abusing animal management by-laws from legally owning new pets.

While the new laws were introduced by the State Government in July to encourage responsible
pet ownership, councils
say they have done the opposite.

Ipswich City Council says it can no longer revoke dog registration licences or refuse requests from irresponsible owners to register a new dog.

Their only option now is a long legal fight.

Several urban councillors are pushing State Government to review the laws.

They will be debated at this week's Urban Local Government Association
conference.
