ACCC cracks down on cafes and restaurants ripping off customers

The consumer watchdog says it is cracking down on cafes and
restaurants for neglecting to mention extra Sunday or public holiday
surcharges.

It has begun legal proceedings and will be seeking costs from four
businesses across New South Wales and the ACT for alleged breaches of
the component pricing law.

Changes implemented last May means eateries that charge more for
Sunday or public holiday service are required to print separate menus.

But an audit conducted by the Australian Competition and Consumer
Commission found some are flouting the law.

The commission said many establishments responded swiftly to
complaints, but eight failed to take notice.

In June the commission was forced to issue infringement notices to the
eight, but only four paid their fines.

The remainder - Sydney restaurants Georges Bar and Grill, Signature
Brasserie and Steersons Steakhouse as well as Canberra's Babar Cafe
and Bar - have been scheduled to appear in court beginning next month.

The commission said it is continuing to work with restaurants, hotels
and cafes, as well as the relevant industry bodies, to ensure they
understand their obligations under the Trade Practices Act.
