Southeast QLD Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Heavy Rain

For people in parts of the
LOCKYER VALLEY,
LOGAN CITY,
IPSWICH CITY and
SCENIC RIM Council Areas.

Issued at 2:03 pm Friday, 21 December 2012.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 2:05 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Boonah and Beaudesert. They are forecast to affect the area between Boonah and Beaudesert and Tamborine by 2:35 pm and Jimboomba, Harrisville and Peak Crossing by 3:05 pm.

Heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding is likely.

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

For people in the Gulf Country, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and parts of the Peninsula, Northwest, Central West, Capricornia and Darling Downs and Granite Belt Forecast Districts.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours in the Gulf Country, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and parts of the Peninsula, Northwest, Central Highlands and Coalfields and Central West districts. Locations which may be affected include Mornington Island, Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Georgetown, Burketown, Normanton, Camooweal, Croydon and Kowanyama.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones over the next several hours in the Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West, Capricornia and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Brisbane, Dalby, Maroochydore, Gympie, Bundaberg, Emerald, Clermont, Kingaroy and Stanthorpe.

Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Maranoa and Warrego district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.

* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.

There is an increased chance of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening across the Southeast Coast district, particularly over the Brisbane Valley. Large hail, flash flooding and damaging winds are a possibility in storms today.
