Southeast QLD Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Large Hail, Damaging Winds

For people in parts of the GOLD COAST CITY, LOCKYER VALLEY, IPSWICH CITY, SCENIC RIM, SOMERSET and TOOWOOMBA Council Areas.

Issued at 1:54 pm Monday, 6 January 2014.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 1:55 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near the area west of Esk, the area south of the NSW border and the area northwest of Cunninghams Gap. These thunderstorms are moving towards the east. They are forecast to affect Esk by 2:25 pm and Boonah by 2:55 pm.

Damaging winds and large hailstones are likely.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
